Emergency lighting is important in an emergency situation such as a fire and a power failure in order for staff and visitors to evacuate the building safely. Emergency lighting will be activated upon a mains failure.
It is a requirement of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to have a functioning emergency lighting system in place. The purpose of the emergency lighting is to make sure that every escape route including external ones if needed and large open areas are correctly illuminated.
Emergency lighting is split into the following categories:
This lighting features a running white man on a green background which can be used alongside fire exit signs which are also available at Trade Fire. The escape route lighting is used to illuminate escape routes that include stairways, corridors and fire-fighting equipment (fire extinguishers etc).
These are commonly panel lights, bulkheads or strip lights for example but care must be taken when selecting the correct one for you so that the required lux levels are not compromised.
When there is a mains power failure these will illuminate and remain on for the minimum emergency duration required. These are commonly used in shops, offices and factories.
Maintained emergency lighting stays on at all times but can be switched using a normal lighting switch. This emergency lighting should remain lit for the minimum emergency duration which is usually 3 hours after a mains failure. The lights are commonly used in cinemas, entertainment halls, theatres and shopping centres etc.
